Haggai 01
v 1. Haggai, meaning festive, was the first prophet to prophecy after the captivity and two months ahead of Zechariah, Ezra 5:1,2; Zech. 1:1. He affirmed the authority of the Lord 25 times in two chapters. The times of the Gentiles has begun, so dating can be accurate according to Gentile records. He starts writing Aug. 27, 520 BC, and it is likely he is old and may have seen the temple destroyed, 586 BC, before his exile. He first addresses Zerubbabel, the governor, and Joshua, son of the high priest.
v 2. This rebukes that people are unconcerned about rebuilding the temple.
v 3-6. The well to do had luxurious paneling in their houses. Only the foundation of the temple had been laid before Samaritan and Persian pressure halted construction. Apathy set in and 16 more years elapsed until the Lord sent Haggai to encourage.
v 7,8. Money had been spent for lumber to build the temple, Ezra 3:7, so after building stopped, some must have used the lumber for their own houses. They are challenged to do what will glorify the Lord.
v 9-11. Harvests were low and the Lord caused that received to have little value. God explained it was because they let His house lie ruined while they built their own. Therefore He had sent drouth hindering crops, livestock and food provisions.
v 12. The leaders and people responded in obedience and new fear of the Lord.
v 13. The Lord encouraged the people that He would be with them.
v 14,15. The Lord moved these people to leave Babylon 18 years before. Since the original plea of Haggai, they have had to gather material and harvest grapes, figs and pomegranates. Now, 23 days later, on Sept. 21, 520 BC they are stirred up by the Lord and again begin to work on the temple. Verses 12-15 are a reminder of how CES started working alone in MBC “dungeon” till others joined to build a new chapel.

In the early 90's I started studing the bible by taking colleger courses, because I believe the Lord wanted me to become a pastor in a Nazarne Church. My goal has changed with all my studies. I have read and compared numerous translations and commentaries in my many years of studying the bible. Some of these authorities disagree with each other. I come across information on studies and classes that I have taken 15 to 20 years before and I have no documentation of where it came from. Plus I have given away or returned many books for college classes that I have taken. So if I have failed to give someone the credit that is due them I ask for their forgiveness. The following is a list of translations and commentaries that I still have and use.
